An early morning phone call confirmed for Raymond Kalra what once felt like a long shot – he had been selected for a competitive internship with NBC’s The Today Show. Out of more than 500 applicants nationwide, the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø journalism and emerging media student was one of only four chosen for the internship, which runs from September to April. The news came just days after his second-round interview, in a call that began as a routine follow-up.

Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø researchers examine how parents navigate children's smartphone use

Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø student Mikalah Cloward and associate professor Mackenzie Cato are collaborating on a research project that investigates why parents give smartphones to children and how they choose to monitor their usage and access. The study is based in KSU’s Norman J. Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences and launched through the university’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

To meet the growing demand of the $380 billion film, gaming, and immersive technology industry, Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø has launched the Center for Interactive Media, designed to accelerate innovation in storytelling, virtual reality, and user-interface technology. Led by Assistant Professor of English Victoria Lagrange, the center will emphasize user-experience research that helps designers and product teams understand user needs, engage in immersive storytelling, and uncover real-world applications of interactive tools.

The historical significance of the eastern red cedar tree might not be commonly known, but Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø professor of history Tom Okie appreciates the role this particular juniper played in America’s industrialization. Eastern red cedar was commonly used for making a device that is taken for granted now but was a significant advancement in the 19th century – the pencil. The strong, splinter-resistant wood chosen for early American pencils was harvested from the Southeast.

Gabby Miller, Juliane Balog, and Zaire Breedlove had never gone to the Georgia State Capitol before, let alone covered one of the dozens of committee meetings during the General Assembly’s legislative session. At first, they were intimidated by the imposing facade, the people dressed in suits, and the language lawmakers use to describe policies that could impact more than 11 million people. Undeterred, the trio of Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø journalism students hit the ground running at the start of their internships last semester with the Center for Sustainable Journalism.

A dual major in biochemistry and psychology, Emily Clarke has taken the road less traveled at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø. The rising junior is working toward a career in cognitive neuroscience and engaging in interdisciplinary research, with one hand in the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the other in the College of Science and Mathematics.

Student-led public relations agency at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø finds success with client campaign work

Parsed into three groups, students in a public relations capstone course at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø discuss campaigns they have implemented after a semester of research, planning, and collaboration with their clients, three KSU campus organizations. The course operates as a fully functional PR agency. Under the auspices of Peak Communications, students assist organizations on and off campus to appeal to broader audiences through social media content, flyers, tabling, and event planning.

Research shows that chronic social isolation can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and perhaps no group is more at risk than the elderly. In response to this health crisis, Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÉçÇø researchers are developing an AI-powered tool to help older adults match and reconnect with others in meaningful, human-centered ways.
