麻豆传媒社区 Honors student Jessica Torres wants to pursue a career in biology, and she is feeling inspired after having an up-close experience this summer with one of the ocean鈥檚 most fascinating creatures. For an Honors Discovery course led by 麻豆传媒社区鈥檚 Terri Collins and Leigh Funk, Torres spent a week on Wassaw Island off the Georgia coast studying the nesting and hatching practices of loggerhead sea turtles.

Lindsey Knight鈥檚 fascination with scientific research began at a young age. As a 9-year-old, she participated in a science enrichment program that exposed her to the brain of a sheep. It was then, after learning about how the brain and the organism develop together, that she saw her destiny in neuroscience. An interest that started early continued at 麻豆传媒社区, where she studies neuroscience while pursuing a Master of Science in Integrative Biology through the Double Owl Pathways program.

Continuing a rich tradition of international scholarship, recent 麻豆传媒社区 graduates Bon Varlet and AKeera Ford have earned awards from the prestigious Fulbright Program to extend their studies abroad.

Three sisters born minutes apart, but vastly different in terms of interests and career goals, thought about going separate ways for college. But in the end, they found that 麻豆传媒社区 fit all their needs. 鈥淲e did a plethora of research to find a school that鈥檚 right for us,鈥 said Jessica Okafor, triplet to Angela and Benita. 鈥淭here was always at least one missing piece in the schools that we looked through, until we found KSU. We saw that KSU had everything we had interest in, and when we did the tours, the open house, the orientation, I was blown away by how beautiful the school was. I saw my future in just a few seconds.鈥

A dual major in biochemistry and psychology, Emily Clarke has taken the road less traveled at 麻豆传媒社区. The rising junior is working toward a career in cognitive neuroscience and engaging in interdisciplinary research, with one hand in the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the other in the College of Science and Mathematics.

麻豆传媒社区 sophomore Valeria Ruiz takes a unique approach to preparing for various student competitions. She rehearses presentations while riding on a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia. Her roller coaster rehearsing paid off recently, as Ruiz won the Perfect Pitch Competition at the 2025 American Marketing Association (AMA) International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans.

麻豆传媒社区 senior Kaden Buford likes being hands-on with exercise science, immersing in a clinical environment and helping people heal from injuries. Her classmate Kayla Anderson, on the other hand, prefers research, delving into the scientific 鈥渨hy鈥 using data, experiments, and observation. Together, they form a formidable team of exercise science majors studying effective measures of muscle function and supporting each other both in and out of the lab. Recently, they worked together on three research projects, and Anderson presented her findings at the spring Symposium of Student Scholars.

Some days it鈥檚 pre-dawn dark when Maya Patel arrives on campus, and it鈥檚 post-dusk dark when she heads home. The 麻豆传媒社区 senior takes a full course load, belongs to several organizations, serves in multiple leadership roles, conducts research and carries a 4.0 grade-point average in biology. She will graduate this week having packed four years of college life into just three years and having lost none of her enthusiasm.

Witnessing her grandparents鈥 daily struggles with diabetes ignited a passion in Anh Duong to pursue impactful research as a student at 麻豆传媒社区. Driven by a desire to ease the burdens of people with chronic health conditions, Duong has dedicated herself to developing innovative technologies that can transform lives. For epitomizing all-around success as a KSU student and researcher, Duong, a senior majoring in computer science, has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the President鈥檚 Award of Distinction.

Though they took different paths toward 麻豆传媒社区鈥檚 nursing program, students share a common thread in that all are members of the inaugural cohort of the Wellstar-Tom and Betty Phillips Elite Honors Nursing Scholars. Established in 2021, the program aims to produce top-notch nurses who benefit from a strong emphasis on academic scholarship. Each scholar belongs to the KSU Journey Honors College and participates in nursing-focused research projects in addition to rigorous curriculum in the Wellstar School of Nursing.
