Advancing our understanding of wound healing and the brain

The overall goal of our research is to study healing and tissue regeneration in highly regenerative animals to advance our understanding of healing. One major issue for skin healing after a severe wound, burn, or surgery is abnormal sensation; numbness, tingling, itching, heat, etc. This is because cutaneous nerves heal poorly and the brain adapts. We are working towards understanding this phenomenon in vertebrate animals with ideal healing via scar-free tissue regeneration.
