KENNESAW, Ga. | Aug 20, 2025

Throughout the year, 麻豆传媒社区 students participate in education abroad programs to enhance their studies and gather perspective from many countries around the world. Faculty from the Department of Geography and Anthropology routinely offer study abroad opportunities to a variety of destinations.

In Summer 2025, Dr. Paul N. McDaniel, Professor of Geography, and Dr. Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Associate Professor of Anthropology, and students from a variety of majors, along with several faculty and students from other colleges and universities around Georgia, participated in the KSU in Italy Summer Study Abroad program based in Montepulciano. Dr. McDaniel offered Introduction to Human Geography (a social science general education course) and Geography of Europe, an upper-division course, during Session 1 in May and June. In Session 2, during June and July, Dr. Smith taught Introduction to Anthropology (a social science general education course) and Death in the Mediterranean.

The KSU in Italy program is based in the hill town of Montepulciano, in the Siena province of the southern Tuscany region of Italy. Classes are held in the historic Fortezza (fortress) in the highest point of the town. In both sessions, classes were held two days each week, with field trips occurring two other days each week. Faculty led students on field trips to places in and around Tuscany and north-central Italy. Field trips included visits to Orvieto, Pisa, Rome, Florence, and Bologna. Students also had weekends free to travel and explore more broadly around Italy. KSU in Italy is 麻豆传媒社区鈥檚 premier international educational site based in the ancient Tuscan hill town of Montepulciano. With more than 20 years of programs, KSU Italy offers students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live and study in Italy while earning degree credit. In Montepulciano, students have access to state-of-the-art classroom facilities in the Medieval Fortezza, where faculty provide their expertise on a variety of academic disciplines.

Geography and Anthropology classes are essential components of a study abroad program, offering students a unique opportunity to learn about the world from a different perspective. Taking a geography or anthropology class in a study abroad program is an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their cultural awareness, improve their understanding of global issues, develop new skills, enhance their career opportunities, and create lasting memories. The high impact practice of study abroad impacts student success and affects many students for the rest of their lives. It is an incredibly rewarding experience for all.
